The soft cartilage of the ears is organized to grow according to a genetic plan that was laid down before birth. Sometimes chronic positioning of ears as early as the infant nursing years (sleeping and feeding can cause chronic folding), or wearing certain hats for many years, can cause dissatisfactory changes in ear appearance. Ear shaping, sometimes called "ear pinning" or otoplasty, is for men, women and children who are not satisfied with the size, shape or the position of their ears.
By undergoing ear surgery in Del Mar / San Diego, patients can achieve their desired ear shape and contour. Otoplasty involves reducing the size of the ear cartilage and removing the excess skin, as well as positioning the ears closer to the head. Otoplasty sometimes can be performed as a minor procedure under local anesthesia. If more extensive work is required, our San Diego, Del Mar and Temecula ear surgery patients receive general anesthesia and are asleep during the procedure. Case 1: This 23 year old female wanted to be able to wear her hair back but was uncomfortable because of her prominent ears. She under went an otoplasty (ear pinning) and was required to wear a headband for 2 weeks. The After picture is a 6 month follow up from the otoplasty procedure.
Case 2: This six year old boy was teased mercilessly at school beause of his prominent ears. The otoplasty (ear pinning) procedure took about 2 hours and the basic recovery required a week. As part of the healing process, he was required to wear a head band to hold the ears in place for 3 weeks.
Case 3: This San Diego / Del Mar ear surgery patient is a 64 year old actor who wanted his ears pinned back. He had an otoplasty which took approximately 2 hours. He requested an additional revision to bring his ears back even further as they had a tendency to "pop" forward. The right "after" picture is the final result.
