Breast Lift

BACK

More women are choosing to enhance their breast appearance by having a mastopexy or breast lift. This procedure reshapes and lifts sagging or loose breast tissue that has appeared as a result of past pregnancy, weight loss or aging. A breast lift is sometimes performed in conjunction with other surgeries, such as a body lift if the cause of the sagging is weight loss. Coastal Plastic Surgeons strives to provide our San Diego patients with quality aesthetics as we review your options during your consultation. By creating and implementing individualized treatment plans, we consistently deliver highly rewarding results for all of our breast lift patients.

Candidates for Breast Lift

Women that have seen significant sagging in the breast due to childbirth, breastfeeding or other factors are generally the best suited for a breast lift. It is important to be healthy prior to your surgery. Non-smokers enjoy the best results, so if you do smoke, you will likely be asked to quit a number of weeks before and after surgery to be sure your procedure is both safe and successful. Some women may find a breast lift alone meets their goals, while others might combine the lift with augmentation or reduction to further enhance their outcome.

Treatment Options

A breast lift can address any or all of the following concerns:

  • Sagging breasts that produce an aged appearance to the body contour
  • Skin irritation under the breast due to skin rubbing together
  • Nipples that are below the breast crease and point downward
  • Excess, sagging skin that impacts the look of the breasts
  • Breasts that have lost their youthful appearance and shape

Dr. Batra will discuss your concerns and your aesthetic goals to help you determine whether a breast lift is the best choice for you.

Procedure Details

A breast lift is generally performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis at Coastal Plastic Surgeons. There are three basic types of incision that might be used for the procedure:

Donut Incision

This incision circles the areola, minimizing visible scarring after the procedure. It is commonly used for mild to moderate sagging.

Lollipop Incision

For patients with slightly more drooping, a lollipop incision can provide more satisfying results with a small amount of visible scarring afterward. This incision circles the areola and a single incision extends from the areola and down the lower portion of the breast.

Anchor Incision

The anchor incision may be recommended for women with significant sagging and excess skin. The incision circles the areola, extends down the lower half of the breast and horizontally across the underside of the breast. Although this incision can leave more scarring, it will be safely hidden within underwear or a bathing suit.

Recovery and Results

After breast surgery, you are likely to experience some bruising, swelling and discomfort for the first few days. You will have a special surgical bra to wear that will keep the breasts in their new position while they heal. You will also have oral pain medication to keep you comfortable during the early recovery process.

Most of our patients will head back to their daily schedules within about one week. However, strenuous exercise will be limited for longer to ensure the breasts fully heal without complication. Once you are fully healed from your surgery, you should enjoy long-lasting results from your breast lift procedure.
