Protect your long-term health and quality of life with advanced immediate lymphatic reconstruction in San Diego at Coastal Plastic Surgeons.
What Is Immediate Lymphatic Reconstruction?
Immediate lymphatic reconstruction (ILR) is an advanced microsurgical technique designed to prevent lymphedema following breast cancer surgery. When lymph nodes are removed during procedures such as axillary lymph node dissection, lymphatic vessels that transport fluid throughout the body can be disrupted.
This can lead to fluid buildup, resulting in swelling, tightness, and discomfort—symptoms of lymphedema. ILR works by reconnecting the tiny lymphatic vessels directly to nearby veins immediately after lymph node removal. This creates new drainage pathways for lymphatic fluid, maintaining proper circulation and preventing the onset of chronic swelling.
At Coastal Plastic Surgeons, Dr. Chagri (Cagri Cakmakoglu, MD) collaborates closely with oncologic surgeons to perform immediate lymphatic reconstruction in San Diego during the same operation as cancer surgery. This proactive, one-step approach not only helps preserve lymphatic function but also spares patients the need for future corrective procedures.
