Eyelid Surgery in San Diego, CA

Your eyes are the first feature that anyone notices about you. While the eyes can express joy, vitality, and youthfulness, they can also express fatigue and sorrow, especially once the aging process sets in.

The eyes show the effects of time and gravity long before other facial features, at times making you look haggard instead of reflecting your true vitality. Unfortunately, sun damage, environmental factors, and certain lifestyle choices often speed up this transition. Eyelid surgery targets visible aging of the upper and lower eyelids to restore a refreshed and youthful eye appearance.

What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that improves the appearance of the upper and/or lower eyelids. This procedure involves removing excess skin and fat from the eyelids or below the eyes to reduce droopiness and puffiness and improve the appearance of wrinkles. This surgery rejuvenates the eyes to make them appear more youthful and alert, enhancing overall facial aesthetics.

At Coastal Plastic Surgery, our reputable, board-certified plastic surgeon has performed thousands of eyelid surgeries in San Diego, CA, to help his patients achieve more rested, alert, and youthful eyes. Dr. Batra has the experience and skill you can rely on for the excellent and long-lasting facial rejuvenation results you desire.

What Are the Benefits of Eyelid Surgery?

A More Youthful Appearance

Even women known for their beautiful eyes can watch their appeal become obscured with loose, droopy skin and undereye bags. Gravity, aging, and sun damage all cause the skin on the upper eyelids to develop wrinkles and eventually sag. By trimming away excess skin and repositioning underlying tissues and fat, you can restore an eye appearance that is brighter and more awake.

Fat deposits, loss of volume, and moisture accumulation can cause under-eye bags or hollows. Lower lid surgery can address these issues for smoother contours under the eyes.

Control Over Your Expressions

Your eyes express your emotions. Unfortunately, excess skin and tissue can cause you to look tired, uninterested, mad, or sad when you are not, leading to potential misunderstandings. Eyelid surgery allows you to regain control of your facial expressions for more authentic interactions.

Greater Range of Vision

It is common for aged skin on the upper eyelid to sag down in front of the eye, seriously impairing your range of vision and making everyday activities (like driving) more hazardous. Eyelid surgery removes this excess skin and tissue to restore a full range of vision.

What Are My Eyelid Surgery Options?

Eyelid surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia or a local anesthetic with sedation. Eyelid surgery techniques vary depending on the condition of the lids and whether the upper, lower, or both eyelids are being treated.

Upper Blepharoplasty

Upper blepharoplasty corrects visible aging on the upper eyelid, including wrinkles, sagging skin, and an overall tired or sad appearance. Small incisions are placed in the natural crease of the upper eyelid. Excess skin is trimmed, fat pockets are repositioned or removed, and the tissues are tightened before the incisions are closed with sutures.

Lower Blepharoplasty

Lower blepharoplasty addresses visible bags under the eyes and the general appearance of puffiness. Incisions are made beneath the lower lash line. Excess skin is trimmed, unwanted fat pockets are removed, and the incisions are closed with sutures.

Can I Combine My Eyelid Surgery With Other Cosmetic Facial Procedures?

Upper and lower blepharoplasty can be standalone procedures or combined with other treatments to further rejuvenate your facial appearance. Combination procedures will help maintain a youthful and balanced facial aesthetic.

Brow Lift Surgery

Brow lift surgery targets facial aging across the forehead and between the brows. It can be challenging to determine whether upper facial aging is due to skin laxity on the eyelids, forehead, or brows. During your consultation, Dr. Batra will examine the extent of aging and decide which procedure is best for you.

Facelift Surgery

Facelift surgery targets visible aging on the mid and lower face. This procedure removes excess skin and tightens underlying tissues to restore a youthful appearance. Facelift surgery is often combined with eyelid surgery to maintain a balance between the upper and lower regions of the face and provide more comprehensive facial rejuvenation results.

BOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX® Cosmetic is an injectable treatment that temporarily eliminates crow's feet, frown lines, and forehead lines. Injectable dermal fillers can add volume and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. These non-surgical treatments can be received after healing from surgery.

What Can I Expect During My Eyelid Surgery Recovery?

Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure; however, you must have someone present to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours.

Recovery time varies from person to person. Patients can expect to experience bruising, swelling, redness, and itchiness of the eyes, but this will subside over the following one to two weeks. Your vision may be impaired initially, and you may also experience a greater sensitivity to light, but these symptoms are temporary and will resolve.

Most patients return to work and their normal activities after one week. Makeup and contact lenses can also typically be worn again at this time. Patients can resume strenuous activity and exercise after two weeks.

It's essential to follow the post-operative care instructions provided by our surgeon, which may include keeping your head elevated, applying cold compresses to reduce swelling, and avoiding strenuous activities or heavy lifting until cleared by Dr. Batra.

When Will I See My Eyelid Surgery Results?

The results from eyelid surgery are typically noticeable soon after the procedure. There will be noticeable swelling and bruising, but this will subside over the next few weeks. The final results may take several months to fully manifest as the swelling subsides completely and the incisions heal, revealing a rejuvenated and refreshed appearance.

While this procedure will not halt the natural aging process, eyelid lift results will be long lasting with proper skin care and maintenance. Protect your eyes by wearing sunscreen, covering them with sunglasses or a hat, and following a healthy lifestyle.

Eyelid Surgery FAQ

Am I a candidate for eyelid surgery?

Candidates for eyelid surgery are in good overall health, have realistic expectations of their results, do not smoke, and experience at least one of the following:
  • Excess skin that impairs your vision
  • Puffy bags beneath your eyes
  • Excess skin and tissue that make you look older than you are
  • Wrinkles on or around the eyelids

What can I expect during my eyelid surgery consultation?

Dr. Batra will review your medical history and ask about your cosmetic concerns and goals. He will also examine the natural shape of your eyes, check the elasticity of your upper and lower lids, assess any puffiness, and recommend the options that best provide your desired results. You will receive an inclusive cost estimate during your consultation.
We encourage you to bring a list of questions to your consultation and ask to view the before and after photos of the surgeon's eyelid surgery results.

How much does eyelid surgery cost in San Diego, CA?

The cost of eyelid surgery in San Diego, CA, reflects the surgeon's training, skill, and experience, as well as the quality of the facility. Anesthesia, hospital or surgical facility fees, post-surgical medications and dressings, and surgeon's fees all factor into the final cost.
The final price will also depend on the techniques used and any combination of procedures. You will receive an accurate cost estimate for your eyelid surgery procedure during your consultation.
Ask about Coastal Plastic Surgeons' financing options, and choose from Alphaeon® or CareCredit® to put your dream surgery within reach.

Is eyelid surgery painful?

Eyelid surgery is performed under anesthesia to prevent pain during and immediately following the procedure. You may experience some pain and discomfort after the anesthesia wears off, but this will be easily managed with prescription or over-the-counter medication. Eye drops and cold compresses will also help keep your eyes comfortable and reduce swelling. Most pain dissipates within the first few days.

Will I have scars after my eyelid surgery?

There will be scars after your eyelid surgery, but Dr. Batra and his team will work diligently to ensure these scars are as inconspicuous as possible. These incisions are made in the natural creases of the eyelid, making the resulting scars significantly less visible.
You can help minimize visible scarring by keeping your healing incisions out of the sun and applying silicone gel or strips. Scars can be concealed under makeup, and the scars will fade over time with proper care.

Can eyelid surgery correct droopy eyebrows or forehead wrinkles?

Blepharoplasty primarily addresses issues with the eyelids themselves. To correct droopy eyebrows or forehead wrinkles, consider a brow lift procedure or BOTOX® Cosmetic injections.

Are there non-surgical options that can replace an eyelid lift?

BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers are often advertised as alternatives to an eyelid lift. While injectable treatments are effective, they are generally only appropriate for patients with mild to moderate facial aging. No non-surgical procedures can match the results or reach the corrective depths of eyelid lift surgery.

Are there risks and complications associated with eyelid surgery?

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks and complications involved with blepharoplasty, but these are rare and usually temporary. Some of these risks include:
  • Negative reactions to anesthesia
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Skin discoloration
  • Eye irritation
  • Fluid accumulation
  • Changes in skin sensation
  • Poor wound healing
