Top 3 Ways to Prevent Aging (And What You Can Do to Reverse the Signs of Time)

Non-Surgical

We all know that aging is inevitable, and you may already see the results of years of less-than-optimal skincare, days in the sun with no sunscreen, and other lifestyle choices.

While you may look in the mirror and regret your lack of dermal diligence, the good news is that it’s never too late to start caring for your skin.

Below, we offer our top three tips for minimizing the effects of the aging process and how you can use non-surgical skin enhancements to help keep you looking fresh and rejuvenated.

1. Use Sun Protection

It doesn’t matter whether you have fair or dark skin; everyone should use sun protection. This means every day, regardless of the weather. Do you work outside? Sunscreen. Do you work in an office with windows? Sunscreen. Over 50% of UVA rays can penetrate glass.

Of the two types of UV rays (UVA and UVB), UVA rays are associated with premature aging and skin cancer.

Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and reapply as needed throughout the day. Brimmed hats, umbrellas, and UV-blocking garments add another level of protection, but for the best results, keep using sunscreen like it is your job.

2. Stick to a Skincare Regimen

There are a billion skincare options out there, ranging in price, reputation, and quality.

Skincare isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach, so finding the right products may take some time. Some people think they need a multi-step regimen that includes several serums, cleansers, scrubs, and moisturizers, which can be overwhelming.

The best place to start is with a quality cleanser and moisturizer. Find something designed for your skin type or main concerns, and try it out. It typically takes one to three months to see noticeable changes in your skin, so stick with it.

Always wash your face at the end of the day (never go to bed with makeup on) and apply moisturizer both morning and evening.

Oh, and a vital ingredient in the daytime moisturizer? SUNSCREEN.

3. Avoid Foods That Contribute to Aging

Eating the optimal amount of vegetables and protein and avoiding overindulgence in processed foods can be difficult for many people. However, if you’re serious about slowing down the aging process, a healthy diet is a must.

Some of the types of foods to avoid for better skin include:

  • Sugar – This makes it easier for collagen and elastin to become stiff and break down in your skin, reducing elasticity and firmness.
  • Inflammatory foods – Fried foods, processed meats, and dairy have been shown to cause inflammation in the body, which translates directly to your skin. High salt content, hormones, and free radicals are also found in these foods, all of which damage your skin.
  • Alcohol and caffeine – Both alcohol and caffeine are dehydrating, causing your skin to look dull and dry. Depending on what you add to your drinks, they also may contain excess sugar.

Non-surgical Anti-Aging Skin Treatments

Continuing advances in anti-aging treatments offer several options for slowing and reversing the march of time across your face.

At Coastal Plastic Surgeons, we offer several options for anti-aging treatments.

Injectables

Injectables are the perfect way to dip your toe into the vast pool of non-surgical anti-aging treatments. If forehead wrinkles are your issue, BOTOX® Cosmetic can smooth existing lines and help prevent new ones from forming. Dermal fillers can replace age-related volume loss in your cheeks, under your eyes, and in and around your lips. No matter what you choose, injectables are a simple way to combat signs of aging on your face.

Morpheus8™

The Morpheus8™ treatment combines both radiofrequency (RF) technology and microneedling into one tool to help treat fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, enlarged pores, acne scarring, and more. Morpheus8™ uses targeted RF energy delivered deep under your skin with the help of ultra-fine needles to improve your skin concerns using your body’s natural healing mechanisms.

JetPeel™ Facials

If you’re looking for a way to deliver the anti-aging benefits of professional-grade serums deep into your skin, JetPeel™ facials fit the bill. They use a highly pressurized oxygen jet to cleanse and exfoliate your skin before infusing it with a fine mist of serums tailored to address your skin concerns. It helps improve fine lines and wrinkles, dark under-eye circles, uneven skin tone, sun damage, and more.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Microneedling

Platelet-rich plasma is a serum created by separating the growth factor-rich platelets from your blood and reintroducing them into your skin via microneedling. Used primarily to treat fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, and uneven skin texture, the SkinPen® microneedling device creates micro-injuries to your skin, activating your body’s natural healing response.

The PRP serum also helps rejuvenate skin, leaving you looking younger and refreshed.
